Official Cisco Certification Guides are good and they should certainly be the first step. Required, IMO.

That said, keep in mind they’re not nearly enough, for CCIE. You will at least have to use them in tandem with the latest exam outline and make sure you cover areas not covered by the Guides.

If you want to actually become an expert, as opposed to just getting a shiny plaque, I would also recommend Routing TCP/IP, Internet Routing Architectures and Troubleshooting IP Routing Protocols.

There’s no real end to learning, of course, but I think this is a good baseline to start from. This way, you would certainly have everything CCIE: R&S covered. And you could then concentrate on whatever is most relevant to the actual work you do.
